She Will Be Missed

Jennifer was a loving wife, mother, daughter and sister.

She was courageous in the fight of her illness and was an encourager of many who knew her. She will be greatly missed.

What is Gastroparesis?

Gastroparesis is a medical condition where the stomach muscles are paralyzed. The stomach muscles do not properly contract to move food out of the stomach to continue the digestive process. On average, it takes a person with a normal functioning stomach three to four hours to empty after eating. A person with gastroparesis whose stomach isn't as functional may take several hours to several days to empty after eating. The symptoms for gastroparesis are vast. Some of the symptoms include nausea, vomiting, dehydration, acid reflux, malnutrition, hypoglycemia, abdominal bloating and satiety which is the sensation of feeling full soon after beginning to eat. There are medications that can help manage the symptoms. Taking medications can also pose problems for gastroparesis patients due to the erratic absorption of the medication caused by the slow emptying of the stomach. Gastroparesis patients can also suffer from electrolyte imbalances, which can cause serious complications. These complications can lead to either a coma or death.

Gastroparesis patients have to alter their daily diets. Smaller frequent meals are recommended to help with the satiety. This is to give the stomach a break from always being full and helps digesting any undigested food. Those meals consist of food being low in fat and fiber so digestion is easier. In more severe cases, liquid diets or feeding tubes are used for nourishment.

There is still no cure for gastroparesis.
